Designworkers talk shop
DINZ's Designer's Speak Series 2011
Designworkers Paul Johnson and Devin Fennell have recently appeared in the DINZ Designer’s Speak Series in Auckland and Wellington.
Paul spoke regarding the importance of retaining a balanced diet as a designer. Citing key projects he has been involved with over his nine years at Designworks as well as a brief exchange between Peter Saville and Michael Peters (two global design heroes at polar ends of the industry), Paul urged the audience of students and professionals to keep a balanced and flexible view on success in design – from aesthetic aspects which appeal to the designer within to the tangible benefits that clients can gain through design.
Meanwhile in Auckland, Devin Fennell teamed up with Clark Pritchard of Gascoigne Associates to discuss the makings of a great collaboration project, the Telecom Concept Shop on Victoria Street. Openly admitting to the trials and tension created by working with a competitor on an important project, Devin and Clark entertained the audience of over 200 fellow designers with their thoughts on how great collaboration benefits from honesty, an aversion to politeness, and pushing hard to demand the best from your partner. See the results of their collaboration for yourself on the corner of Victoria and Hardinge Street in Auckland.
The Designers Speak Series runs in both Auckland and Wellington over the next month or so. See www.dinz.org.nz for details.
