A Duo of Luxury Brands for Skycity
Eight and Horizon

Designworks was chosen to create a pair of exclusive brand identities for Eight, SKYCITY’s new VIP gaming experience and Horizon, their new luxury suites. Keeping the high-end international clientele in mind, the identities are simple, elegant and universally recognizable. The design shares a mutual connection, but the identities are strong enough to stand alone.

The name eight was chosen for its significance in Asian culture as a number associated with prosperity, openness of possibility and luck, as well as because the gaming experience is on level eight of the SKYCITY centre.

As Jef Wong, Group Head of Design explains, “the driving idea behind the design was to create a ‘slice of sophistication’; essentially- to say more with less- and thus create a contrast with the opulent interiors.” With this in mind the logo was approached as an elegant and contemporary monogram, serving as an ongoing signature that is carried throughout the Eight experience, from the stationery right through to the signage.

“We wanted it to feel as if there was an underlying sense of luck and consideration to everything,” explains Designer Nick Riley. Designworks’ collaboration with Moller architects and SKYCITY’s inhouse studio ensured that all brand touchpoints and interior fitouts exuded a sense of luxury. Extensive use of premium materials and finishes such as matte black paper stocks, gold foiling and polished brass across all signage help enhance the premium look and feel.

Horizon comprises of four luxury suites with their own discreet private gaming areas, designed to cater to SKYCITY’s most valued VIP customers.   Rewarding VIPs and platinum SKYCITY loyalty cardholders, Eight introduces a whole new level of gaming and sophistication to New Zealand.
