South Africa & Swaziland
Designworks Wellington designer Margie Dunigan recently visited Swaziland and South Africa. While there to act as bridesmaid at a friend's wedding, she of course still found time to soak up some design inspiration.
“Having grown up there, Swaziland and South Africa hold a very special place in my heart. My trip back was my first since I emigrated to New Zealand with my family 12 years ago – so it was incredibly exciting to rediscover my roots, see how things had changed, and catch up with family and old friends.
What really struck my design chord were the diverse and unexpected visual treats: elegant Cape Dutch architecture in the winelands, Cape Town's Victoria & Alfred waterfront, the textures and interiors of a Soweto shack, a jewellery shop tucked away in a bohemian Johannesburg suburb, carved wooden Coke bottles found in one of the great craft stores in Swaziland, make-shift signage, the evening light on my uncle's farm... I could go on! These pictures are a collection from my trip – countries of contrast, colour, culture and creativity.”
