Designworks' fellows claim top prizes at the Best Awards
Josh Barr and Anzac Tasker, our Designworks fellows, have been awarded the Supreme, Gold and Silver awards in the Student Graphic Design Category at the Best Awards
Josh was awarded both the Supreme and the Gold Award for his entry. The assignment brief was to choose a typeface and create a narrative around it. Josh chose Akzidenz Grotesk, which he discovered was an archaic typeface dating back to the Victorian era. With this in mind Josh built a story around the heritage of Akzidenz Grotesk. He made a point of its longevity by illustrating that it had been around long before everything else that is thought of as old such as sliced bread, the Theory of Relativity and David Hasslehoff!
Josh took his visual inspiration from 1960's Modernist design 'rule books', subverting their sobriety with tongue-in-cheek irreverence. He comments, "I think good typography is about crafting the right language - not about seductive visuals". In a twist on the classic black-white-and-red palette, he settled on a bright pink to bring Akzidenz Grotesk into the 21st Century
Anzac was awarded the Silver award for his work on what he explains as the gap between execution and intent. He designed an incomplete typeface, which at first glance appears chaotic but requires time to make sense of it. This publication demonstrates Anzac's theory that we have become too reliant on technology for graphic design. The idea of taking typography out of its comfort zone symbolises designers stepping out of their comfort zone i.e. their computers.
A huge congratulation is in order to both Josh and Anzac.
